Contest for design concept to modernize Małachowski Square

Zarząd Terenów Publicznych announces a contest for architects and urban planners to develop a concept to modernize this area of downtown. The selected concept will become a contemporary form and will restore it to the rank of the city square.

Chaired by the eminent architect Andrzej M. Chołdzyński. The contest is the result of a year-long collaboration between five institutions representing different environments, Office of Śródmieście District of Warsaw, The State Ethnographical Museum in Warsaw, Zachęta – National Art Gallery, Holly Trinity Lutheran Church in Warsaw and HOCHTIEF Development Poland - whose goal is to reshape Małachowski Square, which has a chance to become one of the flagship places of the city.

The winning concept will be used to prepare construction documentation, executive and budget documentation necessary to carry out the modernization effort. The organizer provides for the grants for winners in the amount: 40 000 zł for first place, 20 000 zł for second place, 10 000 zł for third place and two distinctions, for a total of 10 000 zł.

The Jury will consider the following evaluation criteria: relevance of implementing spatial solutions, assumed in the program in reference to the nature of the place with the emphasis on the functionality of existing objects as architectural heritage, functionality of the proposed solutions with a focus on contemporary functions of institutions present around the square, timelessness of the proposed solutions with a chance to remain in the material culture of the place.

Requests to participate in the competition must be submitted by  March 10th, and the submission deadline for entries is June 17th. Content results will be announced on June 26.
